A production workflow from a checked STAAD.Pro model to issued CAD drawings: views, layers, annotation from engineering data, and review gates that stop CAD from becoming a second model.

Conversion gets STAAD geometry into a DWG. A drawing is something else: chosen views, a scale, a title block, marks, notes and a revision. Teams that stop at import produce wireframes with dimensions. Teams that run a workflow produce sheets a consultant can stamp and a detailer can trust.

This article is the production sequence after a model exists. It assumes what STAAD.Pro is is understood, model checking is done, and STAAD to AutoCAD conversion is available — including tools such as Staad2CAD. The broader data-ownership discussion lives in structural model to CAD workflow.

The rule throughout: CAD explains the model; it does not improve it. If a clash appears on the elevation, that is an engineering change unless it is purely a drawing-representation issue. Depths, haunches and brace bays come from analysis data, not from a drafter’s sense of proportion.

Choose views on purpose, not by dumping the 3D

A STAAD model is 3D. Most steel approval sets are orthographic: plan, frame elevations, maybe a bracing plan. Decide which members appear on which view before you import everything onto one layout. A 3D isometric can help a meeting; it is a poor contract drawing. Hide dummy members. Clip to one frame line for an elevation rather than projecting the whole warehouse.

PEB jobs often need the same views as the approval drawing process: base plan, roof plan, frame elevations. If STAAD only holds primary frames, say so on the sheet; purlins may still come from the PEB engine’s layout.

Layer and sheet strategy that survives reconversion

Put converted geometry on dedicated layers or in an xref. Put notes, dimensions and marks on annotation layers. When analysis revises, you replace geometry without killing the notes — unless the notes pointed at steel that moved, in which case you want them to break. That breakage is a feature.

One title-block origin

If each elevation is a different UCS adventure, dimensions will lie. Standardise the sheet template first.

Annotate from engineering lists, not from the wireframe

Section names, marks and reactions should be typed or linked from the analysis extract. Measuring a polyline to “see how deep it looks” is how prismatic stand-ins become fake tapers. Keep a member schedule on the drawing or as a companion sheet.

Review gates before the PDF leaves

The drawing review is not a duplicate of analysis review, but it must catch disagreement. Measure three overall dimensions. Check that every support on the plan exists in the reaction table. Check that a brace shown on the elevation exists as a member, not as a leftover CAD line.

  1. Geometry gate: sample dimensions versus STAAD and architecture.
  2. Identity gate: marks mapped; no anonymous members on issued views.
  3. Support gate: plan symbols match the reaction document.
  4. Change gate: clouds only where this issue differs, and analysis was updated if needed.
  5. Plot gate: layers, scales, and that dummy members are off.
  6. Archive gate: DWG, PDF, and .STD of this revision stored together.

When the model is PEB and the drawings are mixed

STAAD may hold frames while MBS or CAD holds purlins. The workflow still works if you state which view is sourced from which file. A roof plan that mixes STAAD frame lines with a PEB purlin layout must share eave and ridge. That is design coordination, not a CAD trick.

Do not let the converted STAAD elevation become a second PEB typical that disagrees with the manufacturer’s haunch. If they disagree, stop plotting and reconcile models.

STAAD model to issued CAD set

Run in order. Skipping archive is how Rev C overwrites the only copy of Rev B.

  1. Freeze and archive the STAAD revision after checking.
  2. Convert geometry into a scratch / xref DWG with office settings.
  3. Build or update sheet views: plans and chosen elevations.
  4. Place schedules and marks from engineering lists.
  5. Draft notes, including analysis filename and exclusions.
  6. Internal review against the gates above.
  7. Plot PDF, fill transmittal, store DWG+PDF+STD together.
  8. On analysis change, reconvert xref and re-run gates; do not patch silently.

Engineering tips

  • If a view needs a member STAAD does not contain, that is a scope note, not a sketch.
  • Keep paper space scales standard so a reused block does not plot at 0.8 of life.
  • Make the mark map a plotted sheet or a controlled spreadsheet, not a personal notepad.
  • For long buildings, index frame elevations; do not rely on model space tourism.
  • If using LISP to label grids, run it after the xref is stable so labels do not orphan.
  • Treat the first sheet as a prototype; clone only after it passed gates.

Traceability becomes fiction. Notes are project data.

Either the model is wrong or the column is meant to slope. Straightening hides the problem.

Civil will pair your plan with last week’s numbers. Bundle them.

Frequently asked questions

Should result diagrams appear on structural CAD drawings?

Usually no. Moment diagrams belong on calculation sheets. Drawings show geometry, marks and notes. A rare exception is a clearly labelled calculation drawing, not a shop or approval sheet.

How often should I reconvert after small analysis edits?

When geometry or member layout that the drawing shows has changed. Property-only changes may need a schedule update without a full reconvert. Load-only changes may need notes and reactions, not new lines.

Can this workflow feed Tekla instead of AutoCAD?

The idea is the same: freeze analysis, import trusted geometry, do not let the detailing model silently redesign members. The commands differ. Keep an issued 2D PDF if consultants still review paper-like sets.

Where does Staad2CAD sit in this workflow?

At the convert step, after checking and before annotation. Staad2CAD is a geometry carrier. Sheet strategy and review gates remain human.

A drawing is a view of a frozen model

STAAD.Pro to CAD is a workflow: freeze, convert, choose views, annotate from lists, review, archive. Skip a gate and CAD becomes a second structure. Keep geometry replaceable so the next analysis revision does not murder the notes — or so the notes break when they should.
